About The Guide

Hello! We are Sonja and Ivan. And this is our Bookstore Guide - an amateur guide to book shopping throughout Europe. We hope this Guide will help you find the book(stores) you are looking for. Unfortunately, the bookstores are no longer uploaded and may be out of date

Recommended by Hazel Kingston, UK.

Hazel said: "What interested me about that bookshop was the wide variety of categories stocked. As what I bought weren't antique or valuable secondhand books, I can't really say much about pricing. I bought classic Penguins like a Henry James novel for about £2.50 only. It's just one of those characterful places that you enjoy rummaging around."

The Sanctuary Bookshop is Ten Years Old this year, and to be found in central Lyme Regis. Opened in August 1997. The bookshop has ten rooms of books on four floors, the complete range of Beryl Cook Cards & Prints, artwork by Hundertwasser and Erte, and Cat Art by Ollie Lett. They have a very good stock of quality paperback literature, a reading room with comfortable armchairs, a floor of books mostly £1 or less, and, if desired, some overnight accomodation for book lovers. Lyme Regis itself, (the Pearl of Dorset), lies at the very heart of a section of the UK's South West Jurassic Coast renowned for its fossil beds.

Top 5s

Within the past few months, the number of bookstores listed in our database has been growing considerably and we hope that this process is not about to be slowed down soon. Since we already have a rather wide selection at our hands, we have decided to introduce a new feature to our Guide. From now on, we will be releasing our personal Top 5s of European bookstores included in our Guide in several categories. The categories themselves just as the ranking of bookstores are a result of our subjective decisions, so feel free to comment, disagree, argue in favor of different bookstores etc. Should you also happen to have a suggestion for a category, don't hesitate to drop us a line and share your idea. The Top 5s will be (ir)regularly updated depending on our free time and imagination.

Buybook, Sarajevo

Buybook bookstore Sarajevo logo
Where?
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Visited: August, 2007

We randomly found one Buybook bookstore in Mostar and were surprised to see the selection of English books laid on the shelves. Being born in Yugoslavia, it was more than delightful to see many titles by former Yugoslavian writers translated into the English language. A couple of days later, we stumbled upon two shops of the same kind in Bosnia's capital, Sarajevo. To no one's surprise, the selection of titles in English in Sarajevo is, by far, larger than the one in Mostar. Buybook offers various fiction and non-fiction books, technical books, travel books, magazines and CDs. Besides the English selection, there is a considerable amount of Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian books - thus making Buybook a meeting point from the past where many negative things seem forgotten. Most of the prices are at standard book prices. There is also a café that accompanies each of these bookstores in Sarajevo.

In December 1996, two writers from Sarajevo (Goran Samardzic and Damir Uzunovic) started selling books from the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. They had opened a bookshop in Radićeva Street - in a space of some 100 square meters. The idea behind Buybook was to establish a bookstore which would offer books from what once was a common country for the people of Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia - and the fact that the language spoken in these countries has always been very similar was just one more factor which contributed to the making of this bookstore. Furthermore, the idea was to expand the readers' horizons by introducing English language books into the regular offer, thus making it easier for the people to get a hold of any title in a foreign language.

Over a decade later, Buybook has established itself as a cultural center - a bookstore, a CD shop, café, gallery, publishing house and a distributor of books which specializes in art, books for children, coffee & tea shop. It's a place to promote books, a place where you can meet prominent Bosnian writers, poets, artists, teachers, directors - of all generations.

Compendium Bookshop, Athens

Where?
Athens, Greece

Visited:
July, 2007

On an another random stroll in the ancient city of Athens, we found ourselves in front of a bookstore that seemed like any other of its kind. But we were wrong! This fine bookstore sells both new and used fiction and nonfiction in English, plus magazines and maps. As we learned, local writers sometimes hold readings here. We arrived short before the closing hour, but the staff was kind enough to give us a few extra minutes to browse. In the very back part of the store, there is an impressive second-hand collection of books in the English language, with most of it being romance novels but there is surely a good read to be found among them - at least we had found one. The whole second hand section is kind of hidden in the back, the shelves with the books skirt a stairway which leads to the dark underground part of the store, which creates a specific atmosphere for your search.

Compendium bookstore, which many consider heaven for ex-pats, carries travel books, books on Greece, academic books, used books, magazines and maps. The bookstore has moved from their old location in 28 Nikis street, so make sure you check out their new location on the corner of Nikodimou and Nikis street neat Syntagma. Although their stock of new books is larger than their secondhand one, thorough browsing in the back can surely pay off.

Compendium Bookshop established itself as a regular and quite popular meeting place of book lovers with frequent and regular book meetings and various book readings. In their own words, Compendium holds the taste of a bookshop and the touch of a library.

[PLEASE NOTE] Compendium Bookshop has moved from 5 Nikodimou Street to Alikarnasou 6. For more info, check out the map at the bottom.

International Bookstore, Vienna

international bookstore vienna
W
here?
Vienna, Austria.

[UPDATE: The International Bookstore only functions at the Vienna Airport. There used to be 2 stores in the city but they were both closed.]

Visited:
May, 2007.

While randomly walking about the city during our visit of Vienna, we accidentally stumbled upon this bookstore loaded with English books. The most interesting feature of the International Bookstore is the unusually wide offer of American magazines. However, the selection of books doesn't lag behind (the fiction section winning over the available non-fiction titles), and some of the titles were on offer at very reasonable prices, which is a pleasant surprise especially in the city of Vienna. We also appreciated the browsing-friendly environment of this bookstore.

The history of the International Bookstore dates more than thirty years into the past, and as all great projects, it started off as a simple idea. In this case, two founders of this bookstore decided to bring something new to the German-speaking market - original American magazines. Magazines of all subjects - fashion, sports, lifestyle, tatoos, cars, bikes, music, movies and even erotics. The magazines went straight from New York to Vienna (not that straigh actually, a combination of boat and truck was used to transport them, remember, we're in the 70s...). Thus they opened their first store in Vienna under the name American Discount. The methods have changed through the years, but American Discount remains the primary source of American magazines in Austria. Most importantly, they have also decided to add American and Englis books to their stock and offer them to the customers of their store.

The American Discount group has grown bigger through time, and nowadays it consists of two stores in Vienna, one store in Graz and four stores at what seems to be their favorite location - the international airport in Vienna. From 2007 on, all American Discount bookstores bear the simple name International Bookstore, an altenration which has been accompanied by an addition of some French, Spanish, German, and Russian titles to their offer. However, the vast majority of the titles is still in English.

UPDATE: THE OLD Neubaugasse 39 A-1070 Wien store, which we visited, closed in 2011. Some other locations still remain.

ALSO, Rechte Wienzeile 5 address store is closed, which leaves ONLY the stores at the airport open, which is a sad fact.

Red Bus Bookstore, Budapest

[UPDATE] RED BUS BOOKSTORE CLOSED ITS DOOR IN 2014 [UPDATE]

Visited: June 2007
(Read more on Red Bus Bookstore in our Report from Budapest)

This amazing second hand English bookstore, which is a part of the Red Bus Hostel, became our regular stop on our rather frequent visits to Budapest. We were stunned by the vast collection of books at more than reasonable prices. Come to think of it, most of the books are sold at unbelievably low prices in this bookaholic paradise. Most of the books cost around 4€, but selected titles are offered for 2€ and there are practically no titles for more than 5€. The selection of fiction is really wide and of a high quality, which is not that usual for second hand bookstores. Interesting titles can be found among the non-fiction books as well, the topics covered include psychology, business, biographies, politics, history, sports, humor, teaching materials and others.

Two important pieces of advice for those of you who will have an opportunity to check this place out personally. Be sure to bring along a big bag, because this is one of the rare places, where you can actually talk of a book shopping spree, without having to worry about ruining your monthly budget. The circulation of books in this place is exceptional as well, so it pays off to come back much more often than it's usual for other second hand bookstores.

Opened in April 2001, the Red Bus Bookshop is located in the very center of Budapest on Semmelweis street, close to Deak Ferenc Square metro station. The shop has thousands of second hand English books: fiction, classics, children books, non-fiction, books on war, crime, politics, history, travel, science fiction, travel, religion, cooking, education, language, sport, etc. The bookstore also buys all types of books for a third of their selling price.

The American Book Center, Amsterdam

Where?
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
(The Hague, The Netherlands)

Visited:
May, 2007
Our visit of Amsterdam dates back to the days when Bookstore Guide was still just a vague idea waiting to be realized a couple of months later. Of course, although we haven't been taking pictures and notes, we have still visited several local bookstores, and The American Book Center is one we would like to revisit in the future.

The American Book Center, or simply the ABC, is actually much more than a bookstore and it plays an important role in the promotion of English literature and language in the multicultural city of Amsterdam. This bookstore has a long tradition in Amsterdam, and in 2006 it has moved to a new location - a three hundred year old building in the center of the city. The ABC's three floors are ready to satisfy the needs of even the more exigent readers. Actually, the ABC is often stated as the biggest American bookstore in continental Europe. A second ABC store was opened in the Hague in 1976.

Be careful not to get lost among all the books and if you plan on visiting this store, be sure that you spare at least one hour to indulge yourself in all the wonders The ABC has to offer. While climbing up from the ground floor where you can find a wide selection of imported American magazines and newspapers, but also the books which are currently on sale, shelves full of books will accompany you all the way up to the carefully selected offer of general fiction and non-fiction books on the upper floors.

While in ABC, we picked up a free material summarizing the history of the ABC in Amsterdam, and some history it is... It dates back to early 1970s and an adventurous attempt of a young American couple to open a store which originally intended to sell used books from the US and erotic magazines. What we really like about the ABC is that although it has transformed into a general bookstore with a regular offer, the spirit of its audacious roots has managed to survive up to the present day.

The ABC's cultural activity is a chapter for itself. The so called Treehouse space holds all sorts of events related to the bookstore, book readings and signings, discussions with writers and even workshops for aspiring writers. The ABC even has its own blog, where you can follow all the action and find lots of interesting reading material.

Reports (bsg on the road)

This section of Bookstore Guide is dedicated to our impressions from our European trips. Besides the usual or more often unusual sights and attractions, we always try to visit the local bookstores as well. Whether it means checking out the bookstores recommended by others or simply keeping our eyes open while strolling through the streets, Bookstore Guide is on our minds. We decided to share these findings with you and so from now on, you can find the reports from the places we have visited here. Our UNmodest but equally UNrealistic ambition is to cover at least all the major European cities. Then again, we have no deadline set, so we can at least say that with each added report we're heading in the right direction...

FAQ

What is Bookstore Guide?

Bookstore Guide is a non-profit blog/website, founded and maintained by a team of two people. Most importantly, we are not affiliated with any of the bookstores listed in the Guide in any way and all the opinions expressed on this blog reflect purely our subjective personal views and judgments.

Where did the idea come from?

The idea of writing a Guide to bookstores all around Europe was born during our Balkan hitchhiking trip in the summer of 2007. It was inspired by our shared passion for both reading and traveling and the related habit of visiting the local bookstores during our trips. Our aim was to share our findings with likely minded travelers or book-lovers through this blog. Later on, as our database kept growing, we decided to add some new features to the Guide. You can find a short description of the specific sections of our content on the About BSG page.

How are new listings added to the Guide?

We only list bookstores which we have visited in person or which were recommended to us by the visitors of our site. Besides the necessary information about each of the bookstores, we are keen on providing a more personal feel of the given bookstore and this is what we're looking for in the recommendations we receive as well.

What are the criteria for the bookstores listed?

Most importantly, all the bookstores we list have to sell at least some books in English. Geographically, the Guide is limited exclusively to Europe. Besides this main criteria, we strongly prefer independent bookstores although we do make exceptions in very special cases (if the given chain bookstore presents the only or the best opportunity to find books in English in the specific location).

How to promote your products/services on Bookstore Guide?

We have recently introduced the possibility to advertise on our blog. All the additional information regarding the advertising possibilities can be found on our Advertise page.

How to help Bookstore Guide?

There are several ways in which you can show us your support and help us making Bookstore Guide a better resource for all our visitors. Whichever of these ways you choose we thank you very much.

- Help us by sending us a recommendation for a bookstore which you think should be included in the Guide via this E-MAIL. Check out the Contribute page for more info.

- Help us by spreading the word about the Guide among people you know - feel free to add a link to your blogs/websites, bookmark Bookstore Guide as your favorite on any of the social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Stumble Upon, Digg, Technorati, etc.), or simply mention it to your friends.

- If you wish to support Bookstore Guide by providing a financial donation, you can do so by following this link to our Support page. Any amount is greatly appreciated.

About Us

Bookstore Guide is a non-profit organization with an aim to list independent bookstores throughout Europe, carrying at least a certain amount of books in English. To find out more about us and the Guide itself, check out our FAQ.

Contents of Bookstore Guide

List of bookstores
The main purpose of Bookstore Guide is and remains unaltered. The right sidebar is where you can find the list of cities for which we currently list at least one bookstore.

Reports
Bookstore Guide on the Road
This section of the Guide contains our bookstore related impressions from our many trips around Europe. Each report is an attempt to present our view of the local anglophone bookstore scene in the given city.

Top 5s
As the name suggests, Top 5s represent (ranked) lists of European bookstores included in our Guide, sorted by different categories (either invented by BSG team or suggested by our readers). Note that these lists are based on our own subjective opinions and thus comments are more than desirable.

Articles
The latest section to be added to our Guide is an attempt to widen our scope to more general book-related subjects. We would like to explore several topics in more depth and we hope that these articles will inspire you to participate in the related discussions.

Support Bookstore Guide

Bookstore Guide started off as a simple idea and we didn't really know what to expect from it. The positive feedback from our visitors made us realize, that this project does have some potential and has encouraged us to try to expand our scope and to dedicate more time and energy to the Guide. We have already introduced one new feature - Reports from our bookstore-oriented trips throughout European cities - and we have some more ideas in stock. However, Bookstore Guide still remains our hobby in the first place, and at the moment we can't afford to dedicate as much time to it as these plans would require, mainly due to the fact that we're both still studying and trying to hold on to our jobs at the same time.
Although we were a bit reluctant to this possibility at first, we decided to give our visitors who find the content of this blog useful an opportunity to support Bookstore Guide and thus enable its further progress and growth in both size and quality. Any amount is much appreciated.
