About The Guide

Hello! We are Sonja and Ivan. And this is our Bookstore Guide - an amateur guide to book shopping throughout Europe. We hope this Guide will help you find the book(stores) you are looking for. Unfortunately, the bookstores are no longer uploaded and may be out of date

This bookshop is our first (and hopefully not the last) entry located in the capital city on the lovely island of Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean Ocean. Moufflon Bookshop can be found in the Greek part of the capital city Nicosia (locally also known as Lefkosia) just outside the Venetian walls of the old town and a short walk from Eleftheria Square.

A bookstore with an over forty years long history and tradition, Moufflon has been operating ever since 1967 and it is primarily an English language bookstore (although they stock and accept orders for books in other languages on a regular basis and they even ship books worldwide). The second most dominant language of the bookstore is Greek. Moufflon stocks primarily second-hand, out-of-print and rare books, although many new titles and in-print books can be found here as well. One of the bookstore's primary goals is to have a stock of reading material for people of all ages and interests. We are certain that people living in Cyprus truly appreciate having such a place to retreat to.

Another interesting thing when it comes to its stock is the fact that Moufflon Bookshop has a truly amazing selection of books on Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, published on Cyprus or abroad. This being their specialization, the topics related to Cyprus are wide: from archeology and architecture, maps and guide books, to philosophy, arts, design and, of course, fiction.

Perhaps also important to note is the annual weekend book fair organized by the people at Moufflon Bookshop. The fair focuses solely on used and rare books and is held during the first weekend of November, in the old medieval city of Nicosia.

Libreria il Mare, Rome

Where? Rome, Italy

Visited: February 2010

Our discovery of the Libreria il Mare (also known as Il Mare International Bookstore) was quite accidental, but it only made it more rewarding. We found ourselves in front of its door while actually searching for a different English bookstore in Rome (which is no longer in business, as it turned out later on) and couldn't resist the window exhibition. As the name hints ('il mare' means 'the sea' in Italian), this bookstore is exclusively specialized in everything associated with the element that covers about 70% of the Earth's surface - water. Upon entering the bookstore we were met by a life-sized scuba diver. The nicely but not excessively decorated interior which also includes model boats and ship and even a steering-wheel of a ship helps to create a true "maritime" atmosphere. Even the shape of the bookstore and the way it's divided reminded us of a ship, or perhaps we were too influenced by our surroundings.

Libreria il Mare has managed to cope well with the usual dilemma of all specialized bookstores - to offer a stock which would confirm their expert knowledge of the given field, but at the same time not to scare away the random visitors without any special prior experience with that field of knowledge or interest. We fell in the category of random visitors and we can confirm that the stock didn't fail to impress and keep us interested for quite some time. The bookstore offers a mixture of academic titles, beautiful non-fiction picture books, fiction titles somehow connected to the topic and lots more. One whole shelf is dedicated to books about lighthouses and several shelves are filled with titles dealing with pirates. Among the other topics that are covered in separate sections you can find different aspects of oceanography (ocean life, climate, exploration, geography), nautical maps and lots more. Not to mention all sorts of gadgets and accessories.

Libreria il Mare is no newcomer to the bookstore scene in Rome. It has been around since 1975 and it has moved several times until it reached its present location in 200 square meter space in Via di Ripetta. The books on stock are available in several languages, and although the majority of more than 20 thousand titles that the bookstore carries is in Italian, the English books are scattered around in all sections and they make for a decent selection. There is even a tiny section with second-hand books at discount prices. We would recommend Libreria il Mare to any passionate lover of the ocean as well as to anyone with at least a slight interest in it.

Anglo American Bookshop, Rome

The narrow streets south of Piazza del Popolo, although very colorful and vivid, are incredibly crowded, making them difficult to admire. But perhaps such a location is the best setting for the next bookstore added to our Guide. Its location is perfect both for the locals and for the hordes of tourists flocking the city each day.

Anglo American Bookshop, also known as the Anglo American Book Co., has a very long history, dating back to 1953 when it used to be known by the name of Interbook - a bookstore owned by an Englishman called Patrick Searle. Subsequently, it got divided into Interbook and Anglo American Bookshop, the latter owned by Edward Rush Duer Jr. The bookstore's initial location was in the very center of Rome but due to the fact that the English language was not as ubiquitously used back in the 50s and 60s, the business wasn't really flourishing. Things got better in the 70s with the move to Via della Vite and the introduction of the subscription system which enabled many, especially students, to subscribe to various magazines and newspapers. During the 90s the number or books on shelves reached impressive 150.000 (though today they have a more selective stock of 45.000 books).

Anglo American Bookshop indeed has a very impressive stock, exclusively in English - books on English language, magazines, dictionaries, university texts (the bookstore also has another branch a little bit further down the street at number 27 specialized exclusively in scientific and technical books, mostly bought by students). Needless to add, they also have a huge amount of fiction and non-fiction, and the long lasting tradition of this bookstore is reflected in the high quality selection. Our personal highlights, which deserve to be mentioned, are the incredible contemporary philosophy section, as well as their selection of titles on history and literary criticism. Their task of keeping the stock up-to-date is not easy as some 2.000.000 titles are published in United Kingdom and the United States (you've guessed it, if it's not on stock, you can order it).
