About The Guide

Hello! We are Sonja and Ivan. And this is our Bookstore Guide - an amateur guide to book shopping throughout Europe. We hope this Guide will help you find the book(stores) you are looking for. Unfortunately, the bookstores are no longer uploaded and may be out of date

Anna said: "Now here's a place I can recommend: probably one of the smallest bookstores in the university town of Uppsala, the UEB compensates for its small stature by simply being a very very good bookstore. A welcoming atmosphere where you instantly feel like you're home, an interior jampacked with books and dedicated staff who will find books for you based on the vaguest descriptions (I think the cover art was by the same guy who did the cover for another book with polarbears in it), bizarre demands (I want Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" with the original greek on one page and the translation by Gregory Hayes on the other. And in hardback) or flights of fancy (so do you think the notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci would be a good read?). As its name suggests, the UEB caters to a niche in the book market and stocks books in English, as well as some DVDs and calenders. It's brilliant for browsing and really friendly."

This bookstore focuses exclusively on books in English and its stock of about ten thousand books consists of regular imports from the UK and the US. The store also has a digital database available on its site which contains approximately seventy thousand titles. Even the books you won't be able to find listed here can be ordered and will be delivered to you in a short time. However, the philosophy of this bookstore is to focus primarily on the real physical store itself and to provide its customers with an inspiring atmosphere, great selection of books and helpful assistance from its experienced staff. In their own words: "Our aim is to be a booklover's bookshop; the sort of place where you can lose yourself in the shelves for hours, browsing and relaxing in a chair to the soft music we play, while the river Fyris gently flows by outside the window."

Originally opened in November 1995, the Uppsala English Bookshop changed it's location twice since its opening, once in 2001 and again in 2010. During their second move, over 40 customers showed up and helped the owners paint, carry and sort out books throughout the course of three days. Talk about loving customers!
