About The Guide

Hello! We are Sonja and Ivan. And this is our Bookstore Guide. The idea of writing a guide to bookstores all around Europe was conceived while we were on a vacation in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Having a passion for reading and traveling, we have encountered various bookstores throughout Europe and thus have decided to make this blog and write about our findings. If you happen to find yourself in, let's say Amsterdam or Berlin or any other city, we hope that this Bookstore Guide will help you find the books you are looking for so make sure you stop and browse for some of your favorite books in these bookstores.

Levent said: "I have 1 more recommendation for your website which is located in Sultanahmet(old Istanbul)."

The most convenient English-language bookshop in Sultanahmet, Galeri Kayseri is actually two shops almost across the street from one another.

About the bookstore
Kayseri Company was founded in 1979. Galeri Kayseri Bookshop was founded in 1996 in the old part of city at Divanyolu Street no 58 in Istanbul. When it was established, it started to stock only English books on Turkey. Aimed not only to succeed in business but also to respond to the potential demand of foreign visitors in the country, Galeri Kayseri promptly earned a worldwide reputation at the beginning of the new millennium. Therefore, a volunteer research squad which is supported by professors, writers and diplomats has been created in order to analyze books which have been published all around the world on the subjects that interest their firm. As a result of several years of experience, they arrange trips to the main book fairs in the world to improve their collection and to be present in the world book market.
In August 2004, an elegant new bookstore has opened just across the same street that has served customers for the past eight years. Now they are now the most well-known English Bookshop in Turkey with their selective collection of over 2000 titles and working everyday harder than before to serve their visitors.

Lucy said: "Fabulous cafe set in an old Evangelical Lyceaum building with arched ceilings and creaky wooden floors, there are rumours that Ludovit Stur lived here. Created by Canadian Ben Pascoe, the cafe and bar has a magnificent collection of second-hand books, one computer where you can check your email and a gorgeous sunny courtyard in which to sip a beer and read the newspapers. They serve two Fair Trade and 2—4 exotic coffees. The staff are super friendly and helpful and there are often live jazz performances. The name has an interesting origin and comes from Pascoe’s attempt to memorise the Slovak language as it’s his version of ‘Nech sa paci’ (meaning ‘there you go’) which what waiters say when they bring your dinner or hold open a door. He also has a good way of remembering the Slovak for ‘cheers’ (Na zdravie) which is ‘nice driveway’!"

This is the only place in Bratislava where you can find a wide selection of used books in English. You can read the books while enjoying your drinks or you can take them home with you (if you return the book within a week you'll even get part of your money back). Most of the books range from 150Sk to 300Sk (cca. 5 - 10€). Besides fiction, crime novels, classics, sci-fi section, travel guides and all sorts of other books, the store has an interesting collection of books on politics and humanities in general. Be sure to check out the second part of the store as well - walk out into the courtyard, turn left and walk up the stairs - the humanities, more fiction and lots of unsorted books are kept there.

About the bookstore

The bookstore offers a great selection of imported second hand books of all genres. If you are looking for bestsellers, classics, fiction or fantasy, Shakespeare or Star Trek, they have them all. Their collection currently counts more than 2500 titles and continues to grow rapidly. In addition, you can also come to read one of our many newspapers and magazines. They currently subscribe to Economist, Wall Street Journal Europe, Guardian Weekly & Le Monde Diplomatique.

This place is without any doubt the SF mecca of Stockholm. This is not one of those small nine square meters and four shelves of sci-fi literature spots, but a rather big store with a selection of anything connected to sci-fi or fantasy on its stock. Besides all the new paperback releases from US and Britain SF bokhandeln offers comics, books on sci-fi related movies, videos, CDs, DVDs and even games. The store is quite expensive, since books in Sweden are not cheap in general, but there is a second-hand section which may prove to be helpful in this way. A visit to this place can be an adventure even for sci-fi-not -infected people who can experience the specific atmosphere of this place.

About the bookstore
The store has a history dating back to 1977 and has changed its location several times. A must for all the sci-fi fans… The store also has a branch in Gothenburg.

Situated in a one of the streets in Ljubljana's old town, Behemot is the first English language bookstore in Ljubljana and offers carefully selected books about history, philosophy, mythology, but also esoteric literature and Eastern Thoughts. You will also find here books for professionals in film theater, music and art; fiction and books for children. Publisher's sale books are available for a bagrin price. All this in a picturesque and friendly athmosphere created by its owner Dean.

About the bookstore

Hedengrens has the reputation of being the poshest bookstore in Stockholm, and the prices of the books do not deny this statement. However, it is also a store with on e of the widest selections of books in English in the city. It mainly focuses on fiction and poetry, the non-fiction section offers loads of books from the humanities, they also have a good stock of art, music, film and architecture literature and an impressive collection of travel books. The numbers speak for themselves: cca. 80 000 titles in 9 languages, including French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese, with the English section being very strong. It's a good idea to visit the store during the summer, because of their regular summer sales. Be sure to check for information on numerous lectures and readings which take place in the store quite often.

About the bookstore:
This bookstore with a long tradition is located in Sturegallerian, a short walk from the Östermalmstorg subway station. The interior of the store is furnished in a sumptuous style, so it can turn out to be an interesting experience, to see all those books in such an environment... Everything from architecture and history to stacks of Harry Potter and Lonely Planet. An excellent selection of translated Polish classics and a heavy choice of Jewish-related literature. English classics are available for as little as 10zł. This bookshop is probably one of the best places to find English-language publications.

About the bookstore
One of Warsaw's newest but also better bookstores. Has just about everything you might expect from a shop in the States: a healthy fiction section, plenty of magazines, even modern architecture and monography sections. This place also stocks a nice selection of Polish authors in translation, as well as books about the Holocaust, World War II, Solidarity, the fall of Communism, and other interesting topics, such as politics, psychology, sociology, theater, craft, architecture, various dictionaries and encyclopedias.

Evelyn said: "This is a bookstore/coffeehouse. New and used books, with a specialization in Central European fiction and better quality titles. The biggest stock of used books in English in town and probably all of Central Europe."

About the bookstore:
Back in 1993, when the first wave of post-revolution expatriate life was at its height, 5 Americans opened the original Globe in Prague’s unpolished Holesovice district. The street was Janovskeho, and the landlord was crazy. Nevertheless, they hoped to bring a little San Francisco style coffeehouse atmosphere to this beautiful city. After a renegade approach to reconstruct a Communist era laundry mat, they opened our doors in July with the steadfast motto: “..in libris veritas; in kava vita.” Of course, much changed for the Globe in 2000, when 2 of the original owners, Marketa and Scott Rogers stayed on and relocated the store to this new Prague 1 address. No easy task. Apart from having a saner landlord, the Globe was now larger, more “polished”, internet connected, and still following the steadfast course of finding “truth in books and life in coffee.” The space is beautiful, built in 1895, it was Café Olympia, followed by the reign of a Communist era chef of an elementary school cafeteria until 1992. Imagine the pork and knedliky served here during those days! Then it was misused as a storehouse. As of March 2003 it has a new owner, Michael Homann, steered now by a person equally in tune with what the Globe ought to and should be a comfortable place of books and coffee, conversation and good times.

Kelly said: "Although I missed their two Prague locations, Shakespeare and Sons in Cesky Krumlov was another pleasant and peaceful surprise."

Shakespeare himself would have been proud to buy books from this splendid bookstore! Tucked into a back alley of Krymska with a small sign, this bookstore, once you manage to find it, is a wonderful place to drink coffee and gossip with friends in the cafe part. Or, if you feel like maxing out your credit card, venture into the book part of Shakespeare and Sons and prepare to be blown away with the huge number of fine books. You can also sell your books to this store in exchange for money or store credit, including drinks. Good fiction section, good poetry section, good history section, and, of course, good selection of plays! The only drawback to this incredible store is that there seems to be only one regular staff member for both the cafe and the book part.

About the bookstore
Established in what was once known as “the best brothel in Prague” due to its warm running water – an oddity in 1930s Eastern Europe – Shakespeare and Sons is the brainchild of three Czechs and an American: Roman, Radim, David, and Bryn. The result is a comfortable, well-utilized space, divided into two sections: a storefront café and bar with a small used books section, and “The Book Room” where you’ll find new books and plenty of seating. Shakespeare and Sons stands out, however, not for its brandies, but for its variety of English-language print. Nine sections of books put the store immediately in league with other, more established shops in town.

Several bookstores in Florence have books in English on their stock, McRae Books, which describes itself as the "English Language Bookstore in Florence" is one of them. This place is popular among the local anglophone expat community and it aims to become their preferred meeting point. McRae Books is actually a co-edition publisher based in Florence, many of the titles they publish are illustrated non-fiction books for children, which may explain the wide selection available in the store's children's section. The offer of fiction books in this store is also wide and rather different from the usual offer of major chain bookstores' English corner. You can find many many authors (especially British), which don't rank among the big names on the list of bestsellers. The store also holds a growing collection of second hand books.

About the bookstore
Open since the summer of 2004, located in the historical center of Florence, near the famous Uffizi gallery. The store also organizes different cultural events and activities such as book clubs and author's readings.

Kelly said: " The two Vale Novak bookstores I visited in Ljubljana also ranked high on my favorites list for this trip. At the shop on Wolfova I bought my very first Moleskine from a soft-spoken Slovenian woman. When I commented on how much I enjoyed the store, she handed me a small map with directions to their other location just a few blocks away. “Please go take a look,” she smiled. “It’s different and I think you will like it.” If you love fashion and design as much as books, then you shouldn’t miss it either. The shop on Zidovska contains several floors brimming with books, belts and handbags — hip clothing by American Apparel shares space with volumes on architecture, food and fashion. I can’t recall seeing a specific travel section, but I might have missed it as I drooled over stylish goods much too rich for my backpacker budget. What I do remember vividly are the oversized photos of Madonna, Alain de Botton and Jamie Oliver that I passed as I left — bewildered, impressed and empty-handed. (FYI, one bookstore in Ljubljana that does have a travel section is Kod&Kam; the entire tiny corner shop is a guidebook and map store.)"

About the bookstore
Laid-back, well-organized bookshop with staff that are both friendly and helpful. Found a book that's got you tempted to buy hasn't quite sealed the deal yet? No problem. Make yourself comfortable in one of the cosy armchairs and have a more detailed flick through. There is real cafe feel about this place. Around a third of the books are in English language, and the range of topics is vast. The prices for the English books are a little higher in Tolars than they are in original price, but not a lot. And, they even sell all your favorite magazines from home. Yep, even the men's favorites!

According to many, Anglia offers the best selection of books in English in Russia’s capital, providing its customers with contemporary fiction and lots of non-fiction books on different topics. Especially the non-fiction section is said to be well supplied (history, social sciences, economics, books on art and photography), with the fiction section still limping behind a bit in terms of selection. Full customer service for books currently not on stock is available. New books in this store are quite expensive however, and that’s true even in comparison with prices in UK or USA. Still, Anglia British Bookshop can prove to be the right destination even for book-lovers traveling on a budget. In September 2004, Anglia launched a special project in cooperation with a British volunteer charity organization “Action for Russia’s Children” (ARC), which aims to raise funds for under-privileged children. Thus you can buy used books in English language from ARC volunteers on Sunday afternoons from 13 to 16 at Anglia.

Kape said: "It's a great shop -- always great fun to go shop or just browse around there. Lots of English books (also German, French and I think some in Spanish and Italian... maybe some other languages too. Russian?)."

The Academic Bookstore has two outlets in Helsinki - downtown and in Itäkeskus - and one each in Espoo (Tapiola), Vantaa (Jumbo), Tampere, Turku and Oulu. The flagship bookstore in the Helsinki centre - designed by Alvar Aalto - is one of the biggest in Europe. The stores offer a wide range of books, a knowledgeable shopping environment and good service in a congenial atmosphere.
