Levent said: "I have 1 more recommendation for your website which is located in Sultanahmet (old Istanbul)."

The most convenient English-language bookshop in Sultanahmet, Galeri Kayseri is actually two shops almost across the street from one another.

The Kayseri Company was founded in almost thirty years ago, while the Galeri Kayseri Bookshop opened its doors in 1996 in the old part of city at Divanyolu Street no 58 in Istanbul. When it was established, it stocked solely English books on Turkey. Aimed not only to succeed in business but also to respond to the potential demand of foreign visitors in the country, Galeri Kayseri promptly earned a worldwide reputation at the beginning of the new millennium. Therefore, a volunteer research team supported by professors, writers and diplomats was created in order to analyze books which have been published all around the world on the subjects that interest their firm. As a result of several years of experience, they arrange trips to the main book fairs in the world to improve their collection and to be present in the world book market.

In August 2004, an elegant new bookstore has opened just across the same street that has served customers for the past eight years. Now they are now the most well-known English Bookshop in Turkey with their selective collection of over 2000 titles and working everyday harder than before to serve their visitors.

Athenaeum Bookstore is located in the heart of the city. The books for sale here include a wide variety of both Dutch and foreign literature, as well as books on academic topics, such as modern and classical languages. You'll also find a very up-to-date American and English literature department. Their Nieuwscentrum is located next door. Here, you'll find all manner of easy reading: newspapers from all over the world, travel guides, books on jazz and pop music, magazines, periodicals and more. Prices at Athenaeum are comparable to most bookshops in the area.

Athenaeum nowadays is one of Holland's largest independent bookstores. Athenaeum Booksellers was founded in 1966, opened its unique "Newscentre" in 1969, a branch in Haarlem in 1988 and started a small campus-store in the local city college in 1998. The Amsterdam bookshop on the lively Spui boasts a large stock not only in the literary field but also in various academic fields, such as (classical and modern) languages and the humanities, keeping in frequent contact with staff of both the University of Amsterdam and Amsterdam’s city college. About 40% of their stock is self-imported. Athenaeum is the preferred supplier of books to many Amsterdam-based cultural and academic institutions. Currently it operates in 4 different locations in the city.

Lucy said: "Fabulous cafe set in an old Evangelical Lyceaum building with arched ceilings and creaky wooden floors, there are rumours that Ludovit Stur lived here. Created by Canadian Ben Pascoe, the cafe and bar has a magnificent collection of second-hand books, one computer where you can check your email and a gorgeous sunny courtyard in which to sip a beer and read the newspapers. They serve two Fair Trade and 2—4 exotic coffees. The staff are super friendly and helpful and there are often live jazz performances. The name has an interesting origin and comes from Pascoe’s attempt to memorise the Slovak language as it’s his version of ‘Nech sa paci’ (meaning ‘there you go’) which what waiters say when they bring your dinner or hold open a door. He also has a good way of remembering the Slovak for ‘cheers’ (Na zdravie) which is ‘nice driveway’!"

This is the only place in Bratislava where you can find a wide selection of used books in English. You can read the books while enjoying your drinks or you can take them home with you (if you return the book within a week you'll even get part of your money back). Most of the books range from 150Sk to 300Sk (cca. 5 - 10€). Besides fiction, crime novels, classics, sci-fi section, travel guides and all sorts of other books, the store has an interesting collection of books on politics and humanities in general. Be sure to check out the second part of the store as well - walk out into the courtyard, turn left and walk up the stairs - the humanities, more fiction and lots of unsorted books are kept there.

The bookstore offers a great selection of imported second hand books of all genres. If you are looking for bestsellers, classics, fiction or fantasy, Shakespeare or Star Trek, they have them all. Their collection currently counts more than 2500 titles and continues to grow rapidly. In addition, you can also come to read one of our many newspapers and magazines. They currently subscribe to Economist, Wall Street Journal Europe, Guardian Weekly & Le Monde Diplomatique.

This place is without any doubt the SF mecca of Stockholm. This is not one of those small nine square meters and four shelves of sci-fi literature spots, but a rather big store with a selection of anything connected to sci-fi or fantasy on its stock. Besides all the new paperback releases from US and Britain SF bokhandeln offers comics, books on sci-fi related movies, videos, CDs, DVDs and even games. The store is quite expensive, since books in Sweden are not cheap in general, but there is a second-hand section which may prove to be helpful in this way. A visit to this place can be an adventure even for sci-fi-not -infected people who can experience the specific atmosphere of this place.

The store has a history dating back to 1977 and has changed its location several times. A must for all the sci-fi fans… The store also has a branch in Gothenburg.

Vuk said: "Behemot is my favorite place in Ljubljana. It's a privately owned small place that looks like you've visited someone's home. They carry only English books and you can get all of the latest stuff recommended at Boingboing, Kottke and other true book lover places."

Situated in a one of the streets in Ljubljana's old town, Behemot is the first English language bookstore in Ljubljana and offers carefully selected books about history, philosophy, mythology, but also esoteric literature and Eastern Thoughts. Here, You will also find books for professionals in film theater, music and art; fiction and books for children. Publisher's sale books are available for a bagrin price. All this, in the lovely city of Ljubljana, in a picturesque and friendly atmosphere created by its owner Dean: the oriental carpet, the books neatly situated on the old wooden shelves with a display of books in the middle, the cave-like walls, etc.

Behemot Bookshop opened on the 4th of November 2005. They are an independent bookshop specializing in quality books in English and there are about 2000 carefully selected titles on their shelves. Behemot stocks mostly new books but it also has a section where discounted books can be found. They try to choose the most important and the most beautiful books in a rather wide range of subjects. However, if you are looking for a book that is not on their shelves, you can order it for you at no extra charge. As long as it is English, they can get it for you and the delivery is quite fast. Behemot Bookstore is about books and about people, about people that love books and about books that love people. All in all, about love.

Hedengrens has the reputation of being the poshest bookstore in Stockholm, and the prices of the books do not deny this statement. However, it is also a store with on e of the widest selections of books in English in the city. It mainly focuses on fiction and poetry, the non-fiction section offers loads of books from the humanities, they also have a good stock of art, music, film and architecture literature and an impressive collection of travel books. The numbers speak for themselves: cca. 80 000 titles in 9 languages, including French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese, with the English section being very strong. It's a good idea to visit the store during the summer, because of their regular summer sales. Be sure to check for information on numerous lectures and readings which take place in the store quite often.

This bookstore with a long tradition is located in Sturegallerian, a short walk from the Östermalmstorg subway station. The interior of the store is furnished in a sumptuous style, so it can turn out to be an interesting experience, to see all those books in such an environment... The ground floor plan is circular, so watch out not to end up in an endless book-browsing wander...

American Bookstore, Warsaw

Recommended by Kelly Amabile

Vistited: January 2008
(Read more on American Bookstore in our Report from Poland)

Unfortunately for us, we visited Warsaw on New Year's Eve, and all the stores were closed the following day. So we only walked by the American Bookstore on Koszykowa 55, and peeked in through the windows. At least we got some information from our friend who's a Warsaw local, and we visited the American Bookstore in Krakow later on.

American Bookstore is the name you can find on several exclusively English bookstores in Poland. Although there are six American Bookstore locations in Warsaw, each one of them is specialized in a different field, so you can pick the one which suits your individual needs best. This is a very good idea, since each of the bookstores holds a slightly different stock. What is common for all the bookstores, is that the selection of titles is wide and also fresh, as they are usually the first ones to get new titles from the US or UK on their shelves in Poland.

During its existence which is now well into its second decade, the American Bookstore has established itself as one of the best sources of books in English language in Poland. It currently operates eight stores (for their full list with addresses click HERE), its main base being the capital Warsaw, where six of their bookstores can be found. One thing which should be improved in our opinion is the website, as it is only available in Polish, which is a shame for an exclusively English bookstore.

The American Bookstores take a special pride in their Polish interest section, where you can find many translated Polish classics from the fiction category, but also lots of books related to the history and culture of Poland. Besides a selection of classics and contemporary titles in the well-stocked fiction section, there are non-fiction books from many categories (history, politics, philosophy, religion, but also art, photography, architecture, or business...), an extensive selection of travel guides, and even English language teaching materials and dictionaries.

Evelyn said: "This is a bookstore/coffeehouse. New and used books, with a specialization in Central European fiction and better quality titles. The biggest stock of used books in English in town and probably all of Central Europe."

In its 15 years of existence, the Globe bookstore and Café has made a great name for itself in the city of Prague, and it's praised not only by the locals, but by many content expats or tourists who have visited it. After dropping by during our visit of the beautiful city of Prague, we can understand why. Besides being a great bookstore, this place has become a true meeting point for expats and regular visitors. The interior with the cool counter, high ceilings and the small balcony add to the general cozy and relaxed atmosphere of this place. Several famous writers have crossed their doorstep as well - Julian Barnes, William Styron, Gore Vidal or Allen Ginsberg - to mention just a few.

The Globe Bookstore stocks both new and used books and their offer exceeds ten thousand titles. Foreign papers and magazines are also available at the counter. The books are organized in a nice and comprehensible manner, which makes browsing really comfortable. The offer itself is very varied, that's one of the trademarks of the bookstore. The prices reflect Prague's standards, so don't expect to find titles for 5 Euro.

The story of the Globe bookstore and Café starts in 1993, in the Holešovice district in Prague, where five Americans decided to risk it and opened an English language bookstore and coffeehouse. The beginnings were anything but easy, but they still managed to open the store and add a motto, which describes its purpose the best - “in libris veritas; in kava vita...” (truth in books, life in coffee...). The Globe bookstore started writing the next chapter of its existence in year 2000, when the store moved to its current location, a beautiful building built in 1895. Although the owners have changed, the Globe still remains an exceptional independent bookstore, which also hosts literary and musical events, serves as a gallery for the exhibitions of young local artists, but also gives you the possibility to chat over a coffee or a beer and enjoy their food.

Kelly said: "Although I missed their two Prague locations, Shakespeare and Sons in Cesky Krumlov was another pleasant and peaceful surprise."

Shakespeare himself would have been proud to buy books from this splendid bookstore! Tucked into a back alley of Krymska with a small sign, this bookstore, once you manage to find it, is a wonderful place to drink coffee and gossip with friends in the cafe part. Or, if you feel like maxing out your credit card, venture into the book part of Shakespeare and Sons and prepare to be blown away with the huge number of fine books. You can also sell your books to this store in exchange for money or store credit, including drinks. Good fiction section, good poetry section, good history section, and, of course, good selection of plays! The only drawback to this incredible store is that there seems to be only one regular staff member for both the cafe and the book part.

Established in what was once known as “the best brothel in Prague” due to its warm running water – an oddity in 1930s Eastern Europe – Shakespeare and Sons is the brainchild of three Czechs and an American: Roman, Radim, David, and Bryn. The result is a comfortable, well-utilized space, divided into two sections: a storefront café and bar with a small used books section, and “The Book Room” where you’ll find new books and plenty of seating. Shakespeare and Sons stands out, however, not for its brandies, but for its variety of English-language print. Nine sections of books put the store immediately in league with other, more established shops in town.

McRae Books, Florence

[UPDATE] McRae Books unfortunately closed its doors in November 2008.

Several bookstores in Florence have books in English on their stock, McRae Books, which describes itself as the "English Language Bookstore in Florence" is one of them. This place is popular among the local anglophone expat community
and it aims to become their preferred meeting point. McRae Books is actually a co-edition publisher based in Florence, many of the titles they publish are illustrated non-fiction books for children, which may explain the wide selection available in the store's children's section. The offer of fiction books in this store is also wide and rather different from the usual offer of major chain bookstores' English corner. You can find many many authors (especially British), which don't rank among the big names on the list of bestsellers. The store also holds a growing collection of second hand books.

Open since the summer of 2004, located in the historical center of Florence, near the famous Uffizi gallery. The store also organizes different cultural events and activities such as book clubs and author's readings.

Kelly said: "Anagram is fantastic, located in a quiet courtyard behind the Týn church. "

Tucked away in a cellar of one of the old Baroque houses behind the Týn Cathedral in the capital of the Czech Republic, this lovely little shop has a large selection of English books to offer to its avid readers. Carefully selected and visibly laid out, the books on display make you feel like you've entered a world of words and letters that were just waiting to enchant you so you would become their permanent owner. The whole relaxed atmosphere of Anagram, with its rustic old-fashioned carpets, cellar walls and wooden shelves, just makes you feel like you are in a world remote from reality, a world where time has stopped and given way to books.

Anagram is a friendly bookshop where many people, among which many are expats, regularly meet eager for a good read, to chat with their friends or simply to enjoy a browse through some of the new arrivals. For the full feeling and experience of Anagram Bookshop, visit the 360 degree view of the store.

Anagram, a tiny bookstore consisting of two rooms in an old cellar on Týn Square, has a wide selection of both second hand and new books, historical books about Central and Eastern Europe, a more than satisfying fiction selection and some beautiful art and photography books. The staff is more than helpful and will take your order for any book that they don't have on stock. Prices at Anagram range from moderate to moderately high - but we do not need to stress out once more that Prague is generally not a cheap city, so Anagram actually belonged to the more price-friendly English bookstores we have visited in the city.

At the shop on Wolfova I bought my very first Moleskine from a soft-spoken Slovenian woman. When I commented on how much I enjoyed the store, she handed me a small map with directions to their other location just a few blocks away. “Please go take a look,” she smiled. “It’s different and I think you will like it.” If you love fashion and design as much as books, then you shouldn’t miss it either. The shop on Zidovska contains several floors brimming with books, belts and handbags — hip clothing by American Apparel shares space with volumes on architecture, food and fashion. I can’t recall seeing a specific travel section, but I might have missed it as I drooled over stylish goods much too rich for my backpacker budget. What I do remember vividly are the oversized photos of Madonna, Alain de Botton and Jamie Oliver that I passed as I left — bewildered, impressed and empty-handed. (FYI, one bookstore in Ljubljana that does have a travel section is Kod&Kam; the entire tiny corner shop is a guidebook and map store.)"

Laid-back, well-organized bookshop with staff that are both friendly and helpful. Found a book that's got you tempted to buy hasn't quite sealed the deal yet? No problem. Make yourself comfortable in one of the cosy armchairs and have a more detailed flick through. There is real cafe feel about this place. Around a third of the books are in English language, and the range of topics is vast. The prices for the English books are a little higher than they are in original price, but not a lot. And, they even sell all your favorite magazines from home. Yep, even the men's favorites!

The British Bookshop is a small exclusively English spot in the city of Frankfurt. It has been a stable part of Frankfurt's bookstore scene for the past half century (operating since 1956), offering its customers (as stated on their website) - their independent choice. The English character of this bookstore is expressed in the fact that its offer only specializes in English language books, but also in its decision to recruit its staff members predominantly from Britain and Commonwealth countries. The long tradition, and a constantly high standard of services have earned this bookstore a great reputation and lots of satisfied regular customers.

As mentioned above, in terms of size, The British Bookstore is no giant. However, its stock still maanges to provide the customers with a rather complete selection of titles in various categories. Besides the wide selection of general fiction, you can browse through non-fiction sections which include books on history, religion, the world of business and finance, politics, philosophy or psychology. Separate sections are dedicated to travel literature and even children's books, and as a promoter of English language, this bookstore also has a considerate English language teaching section. This bookstore also has a very functional and up-to-date website, through which it's possible to order any book from their online catalog, as well as any British or American book in print that is not a part of their stock. As the store's offer focuses uniquely on new books, which are all imported from Britain or the US, the prices are somewhat higher.

Bottomline, The British Bookshop has been Frankfurt's premier location for English titles for quite a time, and this fact still stands true.

Come In is a bookstore with resources for students and teachers of the English language. They stock children's audiovisual materials, various English courses (business, medical, general) and books to prepare for your ESOL exams, as well as a good selection of bestsellers.

Founded almost twenty-five years ago (in 1984), Come In - one of Barcelona’s English Bookstores - represents an inescapable reference for any person or firm related to English language learning in Barcelona. Their customers have a special interest in the English language, not only in the areas of teaching and learning but also in the field of classical and contemporary literature. Come In also has a large and colorful children's section to satisfy the needs of anyone, regardless of their age.

Come In is one of those bookstores where almost every teacher or student (and not just those of the English language) in Barcelona and its surroundings has heard about or even has dropped by to Come In in search for a needed book. Furthermore, many public figures, such as writers, actors, musicians, cinema and theater directors, politicians, journalists, etc. have visited this bookstore from time to time.

In the past few years, they've also opened 2 more locations, one in Palma de Mallorca and the other in Terrassa.

[UPDATE: ANGLIA BRITISH BOOKSHOP IS CLOSED]

According to many, Anglia offers the best selection of books in English in Russia’s capital, providing its customers with contemporary fiction and lots of non-fiction books on different topics. Especially the non-fiction section is said to be well supplied (history, social sciences, economics, books on art and photography), with the fiction section still limping behind a bit in terms of selection. Full customer service for books currently not on stock is available. New books in this store are quite expensive however, and that’s true even in comparison with prices in UK or USA. Still, Anglia British Bookshop can prove to be the right destination even for book-lovers traveling on a budget. In September 2004, Anglia launched a special project in cooperation with a British volunteer charity organization “Action for Russia’s Children” (ARC), which aims to raise funds for under-privileged children. Thus you can buy used books in English language from ARC volunteers on Sunday afternoons from 13 to 16 at Anglia.

Open since October 25, 1997 in Khlebny Pereulok, moved to its current location in a rather quite side-street in the center of the city in June 2003. Staropimenovsky and Vorotnikovsky sidestreets corner is easy to get from either Pushkinskaja or Mayakovskaya metro stations or Sadovaya-Triumfalnaya or Tverskaya streets if you drive. Anglia has branches in Samara and St. Petersburg as well.

Kape said: "It's a great shop -- always great fun to go shop or just browse around there. Lots of English books (also German, French and I think some in Spanish and Italian... maybe some other languages too. Russian?)."

The Academic Bookstore has two outlets in Helsinki - downtown and in Itäkeskus - and one each in Espoo (Tapiola), Vantaa (Jumbo), Tampere, Turku and Oulu. The flagship bookstore in the Helsinki center was designed by Alvar Aalto and it is the biggest bookstore in Nordic countries.

The size of the store's stock - around 450 000 books - speaks for itself. And in contrast to its huge size, it's also known for its warm and book-browsing friendly atmosphere and its knowledgeable and multilingual staff which is ready to help. The bookstore has a very wide foreign language section, and a considerable part of it is made up of books in English. One whole section is devoted to books on Finland, it's history, culture or nature and if you're interested in Finnish language, you can also find many Finnish for foreigners publications. Newspapers and magazines from all over the world can also be found in this huge store. Besides the products on offer in the store, it's also possible to make online orders.

The Academic Bookstore (Akateeminen Kirjakauppa) in the center of Helsinki is one of the works of the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto (the bookstore was built in the 1960s), who is often credited as the "father of modernism" in Scandinavia. Although the bookstore may seem quite ordinary from the outside, with its rather business-like facade. However, the interior is a whole different story, with the white marble and glass skylights which illuminate all three floors of the bookstore.
Another nice feature of this bookstore is the Café Aalto, placed on one of the balconies on the second floor, which even has its own bakery.
